Water Damage from Spring Rain

April rain from a storm have left the apiary at risk of water damage...

April Rains, Hive Moisture and Water Damage

April showers in Britain are good for the countryside but can lead to water and moisture around or inside hives if they lack proper drainage or elevation.

The moisture creates a humidity that can cause mould to grow or harm the developing brood. This will lead to a weakened colony and must be managed by beekeepers to avoid the situation.

Beekeepers raise hives on stands and ensure good ventilation to lower the likelihood of this happening.

The stream near Izzie's apiary had risen and water is edging closer to the hives. Izzie takes shelter from the rain, resting on the underside of an apple leaf and looking forward to drier spells.
